Are Cortisone Shots Effective For Arthritis?

I have arthritis in my knee and have been having trouble for about 6 weeks. I can t go back to walking for excersise yet and I m frustrated. It feels like my knee cap is going to pop out at times. I m thinking about going back to the orthopedic doctor and getting a shot of cortisone. Is this the best solution?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome.
I can understand your concern.
Incomplete data like age, gender, type of arthritis, any lab tests (CBC, ESR, arthritis profile, X rays, etc done), any associated symptoms like fever, fatigue, etc.

Cortisone shots are usually not the initial treatment.

Assuming it to be osteoarthritis of the knee, it can be effectively treated by taking Paracetamol 1-2 tablets three times daily for 2-3 weeks, if there is no response to Paracetamol alone Paracetamol with Tramadol or Codeine should be taken together.
Ointments or creams containing Diclofenac or Capsaicin are also equally effective and preferred if you have acidity related stomach upset like gastritis or ulcer.

Cortisone (Injection Hydrocortisone) shots are given if the above treatment fails to relieve the pain. These are effective in controlling the pain & swelling and have to be taken once in three months per joint/year.

Hope this answers your query.
