Are Body Pain, Fatigue, Hot Flashes And Dizziness Signs Of Menopause?

I am 46 years (47 in January) woman. Recently I am having body aching, feeling tired. Have stiffed joints on my fingers. Dizzy sometimes. Anxiety. Few of hot flashes. Feeling bloated and heavy at the end of the day. Do you think I am having perimenopausal symptoms? What shall I do?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi there,

It is indeed possible that you are experiencing perimenopausal symptoms. The average age that this happens is about 50 or so, and many people actually start having symptoms a few years earlier. The first thing to do is to confirm it, and this can be done with a blood test for the hormones FSH and oestrogen at your local doctor.

Only then can you discuss hormone replacement, which has to be considered personally for each patient, weighing out the severity of the symptoms and also risk factors for both taking and not taking the hormones. It is a detailed discussion that should be done between you and your personal physician or gynaecologist, and is not practical in a forum such as this.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Dr. Teh
