Are Blood Clots In Cough And Tightness In Chest Normal Post An Open Heart Surgery ?
hi doctor , my dad is 70 years old and he had an open heart surgery on nov 2010. he is recovering o.k and he weighs now only around 58-60 kgs but since then he has cough and now and then he sees blood /blood clot in his cough mucus . he went to doctors but they donot take it seriously.and he also feel tightness in the chest area.i just want to know is it normal?abnormal?if abnormal what test should he be getting done or what home precautions he should be taking ?

your father needs immediate attention as coughing out blood is not normal
if you think doctor is not seriously taking it seriously take second opinion
after open heart medicines are given to make the blood thin and sometimes that may cause some bleeding from nose with cough etc
you need check up of your father and complete hemogram and chest x-ray
please consult your terating doctor

Coughing blood is obviously not normal..You need to take second opinion and discuss with the doctor for the cause and treatment of your fathers condition. He needs investigation like Chest X ray, Echo cardiogram , blood investigation and may be CT scan of chest to look for causes of blood in cough.
