Are Antidepressants Advisable While On Thyroid Medication?
I am suffering depression. I am also sans a thyroid as a result of cancer 6 years ago. I will be talking to my therapist when I start next week about the possibility of going onto anti depressants. My concern is maintaining balance with my thyroid medications as well as the potential side effects of an anti depressant (specifically weight gain and loss of libido) I am female....... Your thought?
Weight gain is a possible side effect of some antidepressants but not all.
There are some anti depressants that are weight neutral (have no effect on weight) and also some that may actually help with weight loss. Your doctor can choose one that best suits you.
Weight gain occurs as a result of : (1)increase in appetite (2) decreased activity (3) decrease in metabolism (4)decreased fullness By carefully monitoring intake and activity levels, you can help prevent weight gain from any medication.
Your doctor can also cross check your medications to make sure that there is no interaction.
Though a change in libido can occur, it may not affect anyone and some persons, because mood improves, can actually have an improvement.
I hope this helps
