Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Are SSRI Medications Effective In Managing Anxiety?
My 27 year old daughter is experiencing anxiety especially when she does not have work I.e. on the weekends. She worries about her family and her soon to be ex husband who lives 2400 miles from her. She is seeing a therapist and I am encouraging her to go regularly not just booking an appointment when anxious. I think an SSRI would be of great help for a while. I do worry about side effects and dependency. Any r e commendations?
Dear user Welcome to HCM We understand your concerns I went through your details. SSRIs are usually very much helpful in the treatment of Generalized anxiety Disorder, Social phobia and some other phobias, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder etc. SSRIs are preferred for long term anxiety management.
But before going for medicines, the anxiety should be analyzed. The simple and general anxiety is common and it could clear itself with just counseling or motivation or relaxation therapy. anxiety becomes an anxiety disorder only if it is more severe. I suggest you consult a psychiatrist only if it is required.
