Are Folic Acid Pills The Cause For Delayed Periods?

HI Doctor, I am having a delay in my menses. It is usually on time 26 / 27 days but this is 31 days. I have had a pregnancy blood test and a pelvic scan both say negative to pregnancy. The only new thing I have introduced into my system is folic acid. Could the folic acid have caused a delay? Help please

Hi Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern...
No folic acid should not be the cause for delayed periods. As pregnancy test is negative & pelvic ultrasound is also normal(which rule-out any ovarian or pelvic organ disease) therfore following reasons may be responsible for delayed period.
1. Hormonal disturbance such as hypothyroidism could cause delayed periods
2. Excessive weight gain or weight loss can delay your period.
3. Eating disorder or high exercising in last month could also delay your period
4. Excessive stress could also delay your menstruation by hormonal change
5. If you are 40 years or above premenopausal diseases may delay your periods. Below 40 years of age premature ovarian failure could also cause delayed menstruation.

You should expect your period in a week, if your period is still missing consult your gynaecologist
Hope this information helps
