Are Fluoxetine And Buspar Safe To Take?

Hello, My Doctor is having me do research on a new med for my mom. Mom is on Fluoxetine and Wellbutrin. Buspar would replace the Wellbutrin. Mom had a heart attack on Sept 20 and started new meds. Starting Oct 1st she has been vomiting and having dry heaves. Mom has seen GI and had endoscopy and CT, both negative. Cardiologist says her heart meds would not cause this. With the side effects of Buspar, would it be a good idea to this new med? I m wondering if stopping Fluoxetine might be the better bet.

Hello,
Sorry to hear that your mother has had all of these medical problems.

It is unlikely that if she has been on Fluoxetine for a while that this drug would just now cause this type of reaction. Fluoxetine is not commonly known to cause nausea and vomiting. How recently did she start taking the BuSpar (buspirone). The most common adverse effect of buspirone is dizziness which was reported in approximately 12 percent of the patients studied taking it. Another common side effect of BuSpar is nausea with approximately 8 percent of the patients studied reporting this side effect. While there is a chance that the BuSpar could be causing your mother's symptoms, it is not recommended that you change or stop a medication unless directed by your personal physician.
