Are Cortisone Injections For Herniated Discs An Effective Treatment?

Hi I have had a cortisone injection for L4/L5 herniated discs yesterday at 4 just wondering when to expect results I was told 3 days. Can I take other medications whilst I have the injection or is better to wait? I m concerned it may only last 2 weeks as that s what I ve read or will not feel any change

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Corticosteroids are given orally or injected into the spinal canal or near a spinal nerve to treat herniated disc symptoms. These medicines helps to reduce swelling and inflammation in the area surrounding the herniated disc and may help relieve pressure on the nerve roots.
Some doctors prefer to use two to three epidural corticosteroid injections. Others prefer to use it only once and repeat the treatment only if symptoms recur and if the first injection was effective.
Repeated use of corticosteroid injections or pills may cause serious side effects and has to be used with caution.
However, along with injections, you need to take other supportive measures as advised for the overall outcome.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
