Any Side Effects In Taking Duphaston During Pregnancy?
I am 16 weeks pregnant and have been informed by my doctor that my placenta is low-lying. She has recommended I take Duphaston just in case there are any risks. Are there any side-effects and is there a real need to take it considering I have had 2 healthy pregnancies and births previous to this?
Duphaston is the brand name given to it by the company. The name of the medicine is a hormone called dydrogesterone (progesterone). This product is indicated in women trying to conceive if there is proven, documented deficiency of the progesterone hormone (during luteal phase). Once conception has taken place, progesterone hormone is indicated only in pregnanices due to assisted reproductive techniques such as IVF etc. or in cases of habitual abortion (repeated miscarriages).
Misuse and overuse of progesterone can lead to a number of side effects including fetal death and spontaneous abortion (more so in the first three months of gestation), musculanisation of female fetus (such as unwanted hair on face), birth defects in babies such as cleft palate and heart defects.
In case of low lying placenta some doctors prescribe duphaston to maintain and pregnancy. If your doctor is confident and if he believes the benefits is more than risks involved in using this then you can take this drug. Still many doctors prescribe this drug without proper indication, it is misused in many cases
