Generally people with colitis become intolerant to milk and milk products leading to diarrhoea. Thats why dairy products or milk is limited or avoided if you are lactose intolerant. You need to maintain a food diary to record which foods you are consuming and any flare ups you experience after having a specific food. If after consuming milk/curd or cheese, gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhoea gets worse, you must omit milk and milk products from your diet. In such a case, you can take soyamilk, soya paneer or tofu as an alternative to milk as it is a significant source of calcium in our diet. You can also take calcium supplements after consulting your doctor, if you are on a no milk diet. You must avoid harsh fibres which irritate colon and are found in bran, whole wheat products, vegetables like cabbage, beans, ladies finger etc. and replace it with soluble fibre which softens and binds stools like oat bran or apple without skin, papaya, banana etc. Avoid raw vegetables with harsh fibre and avoid fried and fatty foods like butter, ghee and milk cream, margarine as they may worsen diarrhoea and due to fatty liver. You can have lean meat, eggs, chicken and fish but avoid fried forms and rich gravies. Avoid spicy foods, chillies and any other food which may trigger abdominal symptoms. You can have paneer if it suits you. Just keep a check on what you are eating and eliminate any food which is aggravating your problem.
