Anterograde amnesia can rarely occur with some anaesthetic agents but it is rarely severe. Usually it is limited to period immediately prior, during and post procedure and longterm effects are unusual. Hence in your father case other conditions leading to memory disturbances also need to be considered apart from sedation. Other coexisting diseases responsible for memory disturbance also needs evaluation.
