Advised To Inject 40 Units Of Lantus Insulin. Please Explain Dosage If The Reading Increases?

My doctor told me to inject 40 units of Lantus insulin every day. He then explained that if my reading is above 120 I should increase the amount of Lantus by 1 (one) unit...does that mean if the reading is 125 I inject 41 units? Do I inject 41 units even if my reading is 130 or 140? I am VERY confused. I thought if my reading was below 100 that I didn't have to inject anything. HELP!!!

Hello,
Injection LANTUS INSULIN is a long acting ( basal ) insulin and is titrated to achieve target fasting blood sugar levels.
In your case you are advised to increase one unit of LANTUS insulin every day till your fasting target level of 120 ( as desired by your doctor ) is reached.
There is however other method of titrating LANTUS insulin. In this method two units of LANTUS are increased every third day till target fasting levels are achieved.
Abide by your doctors instructions.
If your fasting levels fall below 100,then you have to decrease the dose.
Thanks

Hello,

Lantus is a long acting with more peak and it serves as a basal insulin.
You need to increase 1 unit of insulin for every 10 mg/dl raise of blood sugar above 120 mg/dl.

Likewise you may trapper the dose of insulin by 1 units for every 10 mg/dl decrease in blood sugar below 120 mg/dl.

At no point you should stop insulin without the direction of your doctor because it may lead to hyperglycemia.
