Can Hydrocodone Be Taken For A Prolonged Period For The Treatment Of IBS?

A pain doctor today gave me samples of movantik 25 mg to take while I lessen and finally eliminate the drug hydrocodone that I am taking for abdominal pain that I have because of IBS. I have had IBS for 30+ years and hydrocodone is the first medication I've ever taken that helps control my symptoms of pain, cramping, dull and sharp pains. I do not have trouble with constipation with the use of hydrocodone. The side effects of movantik are the same symptoms I am trying to avoid !!! Cathy Nuytten. Age 62

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Movantik is useful to treat constipation caused by narcotic drugs.

It is useful to control only constipation effects of narcotic drugs.

Long term intake of hydrocodone cause side effects like constipation , respiratory depression, drug dependence or biliary structure formation etc.

Until examination is done it is difficult to say what it is.

You may try alternate drugs for IBS, avoid spicy food and alcohol avoid smoking and caffeine drinks.

Please consult your physician/gastroenterologist, he will examine and treat you accordingly.
