80 Years. Has Dementia, Alzheimer S. Mood Swings, Hallucinations, Confusion. On Tranzone At Night. Suggested Seroquel 12.5. Suggest

Hi My mom is 80 yrs old and she is in a nursing home. She has dementia and alzheimer. She drank a lot for many years. She is getting angry, nervous, halucinating sometimes and she sometimes doesn't know my name. She can not comprehend she is the mother and I am the daughter. I visit and take care of her every day at the nursing home. She is on tranzone at night. Now they want to put her on Seroquel 12.5. I research this medicine and it said don't give to older adults with dementia. She really doesn't want to walk. Most of her days she is angry. What can she take to take the edge off. I don't want her to be sleeping all day like some of the patients are. Can you help me.

Hi,

I agree with you that use of antipsychotic agents like Seroquel in patients with dementia is associated with an increased risk of death. But since she has severe dementia and also has developed psychotic symptoms because of which she is angry and hallucinates, medications other than antipsychotics will not be of much benefit. Research shows that Seroquel is safer than other antipsychotics for patients with dementia. Also the dose of 12.5 mg is far smaller than the 100 to 800 mg used for other indications. So I suggest that you go ahead with your doctor's advice without any qualms. It will benefit her and if she becomes sleepy, then Tranzone may be stopped.

Hope this helps you. Best wishes.
