57 Years. Diagnosed Large Polyp In Uterus. Suggested Uterus Removal. No Removal Of Polyp Done During Hysteroscopy. Opinion?

I have been diagnosed with a large polyp in my uterus. My Obgyn suggested because I am 57 I should have my Uterus removed as I will never have to worry about Uterine Cancer. This seems a bit drastic to me. She did a Hysteroscopy in the office and did not remove the Polyp then. Yet she wants me to have a Hysterectomy as she says I don't need my Uterus anymore! What is your professional opinion?

Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this uterine polyp. Hope you get a soolution soon to this.

I don't know why she didn't remove this polyp during hysteroscopy. May be you should ask her as there may have been other concerns that made this impossible or unlikely. May be the size was the problem here. Talk to her, please.

The decision to get your uterus removed alongside the polyp is entirely yours. Though it sounds great knowing you would never have to worry about uterine cancer, it is a procedure that goes alongside risks. Also, you may have more personal reasons why you would love your uterus to stay in place that shem ay not be considering at this time. I have ad clients who tel me that is what really makes them feel woman and without, they don't know how they would feel. I don't know what your thoughts about the uterus are.

If I were in your position and needed abdominal surgery for this, I would have gone for total hysterectomy because of the advantages of never having to worry about uterine as well as cervical cancer. However, it is a very sensitive issue and the decision should be entirely yours. Choose what you feel most comfortable with and let your OBGYN work with you on it.

I hope this answers your query fully. Please, feel free to return with mores questions if need be and I would gladly address them.
I wish you well as you seek the best and most acceptable solution to this.
