21 Month Old Son, Taking Antibiotics For Red Ear, Red Throat, High Fever. Is Taking Amoxil Safe For 21 Month Old Baby?

Hello doctor I have a 21 month old son whom 2 weeks ago had a course of antibiotics for red ear and very red throat (flu type symptoms I thought) very very high fevers. Anyway he has been well again for just over a week and today woke crying in pain from same ear. Took him to GP who says he has a middle ear infection to give him Amoxil AGAIN and Otodex ear drops. Are those ear drops safe at 21 months of age? Paula

Hi dear

Welcome to the Platform of the Health Care Magic.

Amoxicillin is a broad spectrum antibiotic of penicillin group. This is considered to be quite safe especially for the children.

Antibiotic should be used with recommended dose and duration according to the weight of the child.

Repeat ear infection after some times could be because of incomplete and underdose antibiotic course.

Otodex ear drops is going to give some symptomatic relief for severe earache.
They can be given frequently if required.

Hope your query is answered.

Thanks

definitely safe. and for ear infection amoxycilline is the drug of choice if he is not allergic to previously. 1 week to 10 days of antibiotic is needed to treat ear infection. he may have frequent passage of stools(not loose stools), which is a minor issue.
