2 Year Old With Ear Infection. Brownish Discharge From Ears And Nose. Using Ciprodex. Have Ear Pain. Ear Drops Prescribed. Right Medication?

My 2 year old has an ear infection . No fever but lots of drainage from the ears and nose . We are using ciprodex (2 days) but the drainage wont stop. It had an orange brown tint this evening. My son is complaining of pain also. I am treating him with ibuprophen for children too. I called his doctor but they told me to try the drops for a few days. Is this normal?

Hi,
Thank you for posting your query in healthcaremagic.com and giving us this opportunity to clarify your doubts.
Well, ear infection can be a serious issue and you should never sit on it. If there has been a change in the colour of the ear secretions and if you think they have become more pussy and thick, I would recommend you to visit your pediatric ENT specialist to get the ears reviewed. The infection may be spreading or it may be getting organised. One good thing is that he is not getting fever. We are not even sure if the organism is responding to your antibiotic. An ear swab culture and sensitivity will help to confirm the organism causing this infection and the appropriate antibiotic to it.
I hope I have been of some help to you in clarifying your doubts and help you make a decision. Take care and stay healthy.

Hi
Thanks for your query.
As your child is having lot of discharge from ears and there is associated pain as well,i suggest you not to put any drops.
You need to see your pediatrician as cause of discharge needs to be evaluated and he may need a course of oral antibiotic.
In the meantime you can give paracetamol for pain,

Your child will be fine.
God bless.

Pediatrician, Neonatology Dr. Ravikiran Reddy's  Response
Hi I have gone through your complaints.
Generally ear infection will present with fever, excessive cry, fowl smelling or pus discharge from the ears associated with cold or cough.
As your child doesn't have any of the above findings and as you were explaining a orange coloured brownish discharge , the other thing which has to be ruled out is injury or any bleeding.
2 years is a risky age group where the children might poke into the ears.
Please kindly the opinion of E.N.T specialist.
Thank you. Good day. Recover soon
