2 Year Old Having Vomiting. Sleeping Excessively. Should Be Worried?

my 2 year old daughter had a stomach bug that she caught from another child at day care. The vomiting lasted from 9pm to 4 am, this was on a tuesday night/ wednesday morning. Here it is Thursday and she is sleeping alot. She took roughly 4 naps yesterday, totaling about 8 hours of sleep, slept all night, woke up at regular time this morning and is now asleep again (currently 3pm and she has napped roughly 4 hours so far today). she is on course to yesterdays nap-a-thon record today....

Hi, thanks for using healthcare magic

In gastroenteritis in a child the important aspect of treatment is hydration status. Because children can rapidly become dehydrated, it is important that this be monitored.
Since her episodes of vomiting were a few days ago, her hydration should be normal. This is assessed by her urine output (is she passing the same amount of urine), are her skin/tongue/inner aspect of eyes dry.
Drowsiness can also be an indicator of poor hydration and is concerning in that aspect but if you believe she is properly hydrated then she is likely sleeping because she is unwell and her body is trying to recoup itself.

In the absence of no other symptoms and a normal hydration status, she may be just trying to heal herself.

I hope this helps

Pediatrician Dr. Synthyia Bhagat's  Response
Hi
Thanks for your query,
As per symptoms your daughter has acute gastritis,it is good that vomiting has settled.
Drowsiness could be apart of overall weakness after episode of illness.
Most important thing is to maintain proper hydration of child.
I suggest you to give her plenty of fluids, coconut water, lemon water, curd, give simple bland diet.
Her activity will resume in couple of days.

Wishing your child good health.
God bless.
