18 Year Old Having Palpitation Episodes. Is This Normal?

I am 18 and for the last few days, my heart beat has started getting fast for a few seconds, like when youve just been surprised, or when youre anxious about something. It lasts a couple seconds, and then stops. It might start again a few minutes later or a few hours later or it might not happen again until the next day. Whats wrong?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
Increased heart rate when surprised or anxious shall occur in many apparently healthy individuals.
when a person can feel an abnormality in the normal beating of the heart, it is termed Palpitation.
Also in daily life, When we consume some stimulants of heart or brain like
- caffeine
- tobacco
-alcohol
- OTC medications such as pseudoephedrine, which is found in cold preparations, we may get palpitations
As for you concerned, If you are a Female, I shall advice you to rule out Anaemia or hyperthyroidism, which are potential causes of Palpitation.
Otherwise,If there is NO difficulty in breathing on exertion, chest pain or fainting episodes, we shall consider this increased heart rate as normal.
take care,
regards,
Dr.K.Muthukumar MD
