13 Years Old Girl Suffering From Chest Pain And Sinking Feeling With Tightening And Burning

My 13 year old daughter has been having pains in her chest for the past week. I took her to the doctor who said it is probably a strain to her chest wall . However, she still doesn t feel this is correct. She describes it like a sinking feelin, followed by a tightening and burning. It comes in spasms which leaves her doubled over and clutching her chest. I don t know what to do for her since the doctor felt it was not serious. She just prescribed Aleve to alleviate any swelling. It isn t helping her and she continues to complain. I have prolapse mitrovalve but the doctor could not hear an echo and ruled this out. Do you have any suggestions?

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi

Chest pain at this age has varied causes. You have not described the exact location. If it is in the center and accompanied by burning, she may be having esophagitis(inflamation of food pipe) due to hyper-acidity. There is a condition called Gastro-esophageal reflux disease(GERD) which may cause pain in the chest. Does she complains of any palpitations or breathlessness? Does the pain increase if she takes a deep breath? If the answer to later two queries is yes, then you should get her chest X-ray and ECG done.

For the time being I suggest her to avoid coffee, tea spicy and fried foods. Try some antacid like Rabiprazole along with Digene-MPS. If there is no relief after few days, better consult a pediatrician, in your town, who can guide you further.
