Brief Answer:
Red wine contains substances that cause organic reactions

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for Ask A Doctor for your health-related questions.

Red wine contains high amounts of histamine and sulfites which, depending on the body's sensitivity, can trigger systemic reactions. Histamine is a hormone that is normally produced in our body which is very important in the defense against infections.

However, due to the fact that histamine causes dilation of the blood vessels, it can cause swelling and inflammation in the soft tissues, thus causing pain and sensation of fatigue.

Another reason for leg fatigue associated with red wine is that alcohol interferes with the breakdown of lactic acid, which causes muscle soreness. Alcohol also impairs amino acids (units that makes up proteins) which our body uses for energy. This leads to a decrease in energy and muscle recovery.

I hope I have answered your question. You are welcome to ask any further questions.

Take care.
