Brief Answer:
Seems allergic pharyngitis

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to Ask A Doctor service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Your wife is suffering from allergic pharyngitis which is inflammation of the pharynx. It may be due to her inherent allergy to certain agents or due to acid reflux. Basically cough syrup has no role in reducing the cough and moreover it's not wise to use cough syrup always. Because cough is a protective reflex to remove the allergens going to the lungs.

My recommendations are as follows:
Start steam inhalation through nose.
Drink plenty of water.
Start omeprazole tablet before food.
Start betadine and warm saline gargle.
Take some rest.
She can start some montelukast levocetrizine tablet.
If there is also running nose and sneezing then start on some nasal spray.
Avoid spicy food.
Avoid exposure to dust,cold.
She can have bromhexine lozenges.

Follow up for 1 week and review. If it's not relieving then she may need Chest X ray and throat swab for culture.

Hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.
