Question: my calfs are hard and painful, both to walk and touch. red splotches have appeared on my left foot and leg below the knee.

Hi,

I suggest you to please see the Emergency room.
You seem to have vessel disease. The splotches could be due to thrombosis seeping under the skin.
You need an immediate color doppler / Ultrasound of the calf muscles to understand the problem.
Though there are benign causes for hard and painful calves I want to alert on serious causes at this age.
So please see at ER who can consult a vascular surgeon quickly.
