Question: hi I am a lactating mother who is giving milk to 3 month old baby boy and I am feeling cough quite a lot from today and feeling a bit pain at the chest area while coughing and even I see my baby is coughing for 8-9 coughs which happened 4-5 times today. what syrup can I use to reduce cough so that it will not effect my child anymore? also, what medicine should I give to him and when should we give him that (as in how long should we wait till give him medicine)? thanks in advance. and I don't see any mucus getting formed so I believe it's dry cough.

Brief Answer:
Dry cough can be controlled with warm saline gargles and syrup Ascoril.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Having cough is a common occurrence during the changing season. If the cough is associated with expectoration or pain in the throat that is causing difficulty in swallowing or fever or noise from the chest then proper antibiotics are needed to control it. You can safely take antibiotics like Amoxycillin - clavulanic acid or Cefixime during lactation. The baby also may need antibiotics if any of the above said symptoms appear.
Doing warm saline gargles and cough syrup like Honitus or Ascoril can help in controlling the mild symptoms. Regarding the baby it is best to consult his pediatrician for a direct examination and proper antibiotics.

I hope this answers your query.
