Can I Get Pregnant Despite Having I Pill Post Unprotected Sex?
Question: Good morning,
I had sex with my partner without protection, and took the morning after pill. We said we would use condoms, and inevitably ended up without them during intercourse, although he always ejaculated outside of me. I took a second dose of EC. A few day later I had a very strong, painful, bloated period, very dark. Within a couple of days it was normal red and I had intercourse with my partner during this period (again, without protection and external ejaculation). After a few more days of failed use of condoms we decided for me to get the copper spiral, and made an appointment for it. I took a third does of the morning after pill. Two days day later my Basal Body temparature was very high, I had a milky secretion from my vagina, and also from my breasts upon pressing my nipples (this miklk in my breasts is how I first knew I was pregnant in my first and only pregnancy 17 years ago). We figured I was pregnant (and made plans for having the baby --I am in my miid-thirties). After intercourse, however, I had a waxy substance in my pubic area (the mucus plug?), plus sharp pain on my left groin. Two days later I had to fly on business, walked a lot, started having heavy cramping in my uterine area and lower back pain (although the one-sided groin pain was gone). I sat down to rest, got back to the hotel, and the next morning I had brown bleeding, that has not stopped for couple of days. I no longer have the millky secretion from my breasts, nor the tenderness. Could it be I had a miscarriage due to the high level of levostrol in the three doses of emergency contraception?

Brief Answer:
The probabilities of pregnancy are very less.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing to us about it.
I can understand your concern, though.
I have gone through your history and in my opinion with your description the probability of pregnancy are very less because you, had I-pill everytime after unprotected sex and he always ejaculated outside.
I believe your symptoms may be due to the hormonal disturbances caused by I-pill because it contains high doses of hormone in it.
But to confirm it you can consult a gynecologist and get yourself examined and pelvic ultrasound done to rule out the cause of your symptoms.
Hope it is useful, feel free to ask more.
Good luck.
Regards
Dr.Richa

Thank you for your prompt response Dr. XXXXXXX I am curious to know about the waxy substance (just like wax) that I expelled after intercourse. Could have this been a mucus plug? Could I have miscarried? I am bleeding bright red blood now (this has changed in the last hours since I wrote you, when the bleeding was dark brown).
Looking forward to your answer!
Kind regards,

Brief Answer:
It can be due to hormonal changes.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
You are welcome here always.
This waxy discharge can be due to hormonal changes.
As I stated before that chance of pregnancy are very less in your case it is most likely not a mucous plug and not a miscarriage.
Now you are receiving your normal menstrual flow.
So, do not worry about it.
Hope it is clear, feel free to ask more questions.
Good luck.

Brief Answer:
Hopefully it will not affect your future pregnancy.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Nice to hear from you again though.
Yes, this episode may not affect your future pregnancy.
But frequent use of I-pill should be averted because it may cause hormonal disturbances which further cause menstrual irregularities.
So better use regular method of contraception in the hereafter.
Hope it is useful, feel free to ask more.
Do accept my reply if no further query.
Good luck.
