Would Prilosec cause side effects after long term use?

Question: Hello: I am a 53 year old man and suffer from GERD. I have been on Prilosec for 5-6 years and it does work for me, but I still have to take antacids a few times throughout the day after I eat. I did have an endoscopy about 8 years ago and everything was fine. I saw my primary care physician yesterday and he mentioned that it might be a good idea to have another endoscopy. Anyway, I made the mistake of looking for information on the internet and came across all of these horror stories about Barrets Esophagus and esophageal cancer etc. I am now filled with anxiety and freaked out. I guess I am a worry wart by nature. I have also been reading about Apple Cider Vinegar to treat Gerd and those articles talk about there not being enough acid in your stomach. I am just looking for some guidance and reassurance. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Reassure yourself and Manage Stress

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for writing in

Long term safety of Prilosec has been established so I would suggest you continue with that and manage your stress levels

Endoscopy if eight years old would be recommended

The chances of Malignancy and Barrets Esophagus are there but not that common apart from the fact that all literature on the net is not authentic

Follow these tips for GERD :

1] Avoid spicy, fermented meals
2] Do not have heavy meals
3] Avoid smoking and alcohol
4] Wear loose clothes
5] Do not stoop
6] Do not lift heavy weights
7] Raise the head end of your bed
8] If Obese lose weight
9] If under stress - Manage stress levels by meditation and exercise

Apple cider vinegar etc are forms of antacids only and any antacid would help in your symptoms of GERD

Hope this helps
