Brief Answer:
It is doubtful, which type of test is used?

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing us.

Your sentence was ambiguous. From what I understand you have been past smoker and relapsed some time ago. Today you had 6 cigarettes per day. Or did you start with 6 cigarettes after quitting? Please clarify the statement in the follow up.

Assuming your relapse was some time ago, my answer is as below:

Cotinine blood test and urine test come positive up to 4 to 10 days and 1-4 days respectively depending upon duration, quantity, individual metabolism, type of cigarettes used.

In your case blood cotinine test can show positive result up to maximum 5-10 days from today onwards if you do not smoke until then.

Please revert back to me that what type of test is going to be used and the clarification.

Regards,
Dr.Chintan Solanki.

I was smoke free for 12 months. I'm having surgery on 1/6. I had about 6 cigarettes on 1/1. I'm not sure if they did the cotinine blood work at my previous op appt or they are doing it via blood or urine the day of my surgery. My question was do you think my levels will be close to negative on 1/6.

Brief Answer:
you can pass urine test, blood test may or may not pass

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for information and clarification.

You are not smoking since 12 months and only took 6 cigarettes on 1/1.

Your urine cotinine test will be negative likely on 1/6.

Your blood cotinine test may come negative if done on 1/6 considering 12 months of abstinence from smoking.I am not saying that it will come negative. 5 days from last intake is at border point and 20-25% chances that it may come positive.

I hope you are clear now.If still any query do not hesitate to ask.

regards,
Dr.Chintan Solanki.
