Brief Answer:
Probably for purpose of deaddiction or insomnia

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

I read your query and understand your concerns about your deceased sister.

Although it is never possible to comment without knowing the full details of case but diazepam can be prescribed for alcoholics for following purpose.

1. Deaddiction- It takes care of withdrawal symptoms of alcohol if the patient weans from alcohol.

2. Insomnia- This is another indication for diazepam prescription. In such scenario the patient is advised to stop alcohol.

3. Seizure disorder- This is another indication for diazepam prescription even for alcoholics.

4. There could be many more such as anxiety, alprazolam dependence, edlirium among others.

There is no law which prevents a physician to treat his family members. Every physician have privilege to treat or not treat certain patients including spouse.

I hope this helps you.
Feel free to write back to me if you have more questions.
Thanks and regards.

You said it’s not illegal for a physician to prescribe controlled substances for their spouse. Given that, is there a logical reason why my sisters husband wrote the prescription for at least one of these controlled substances (Xanax) out to my sister under her maiden name. It was written for 120 1mg tablets, and filled approximately 3 weeks prior to her passing.
