Question: Hi Doctor, my daughter is 7 weeks old and since yesterday she has been throwing up all that she drinks. it's a mixture of both milk and curled milk. My wife and I are both worried. can you help us to why this is happening and how to avoid this. FYI: after she vomits she feels a lot relaxed and happy for about 20mins and then starts crying again.

Brief Answer:
Inputs needed

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

I have gone carefully through your query. I need to ask a few things and the inputs are also given herewith.
* Please confirm if the baby is exclusively on breast feed. Formula feeds are hard to digest and may make the baby throw up. Switching back to exclusive breast feeding should help.
* Please confirm if the baby is throwing up more than 50% of the feed amount. If the throwing up is less than that it is possibly not anything concerning.
* Please mention how long this has been going on. If case it is from yesterday only (as indicated), it could be due to some gastritis and all you need to do is to give increased amount of breast feeding. If not on exclusive breast feeding, give ORS (oral rehydration solution). Monitor urine output. If more than 6 times in 24 hours, you need not worry.
* Throwing up could also indicate overfeeding or lack of proper burping. You should burp the baby for at least 15-20 mins after each feed. All you need to do is to hold the baby head end elevated for this duration. The extra air ingested during feeds. Proper burping will ensure its escape and the milk will not regurgitate back from the stomach to the food pipe, thus providing relief.

Feel free to write back.

HiDic, thank you so much. She is exclusively on breast feed. Yes, she throws up a lot of it could be more than 50% but not sure since it's breast feed. Its just been this way since yesterday. We try to give her burp and she gets small burps and at times along with burp the milk comes out and also when she puts pressure she pukes.

Brief Answer:
Ondansetron drops/syrup should help

Detailed Answer:
It is good to know that the child is exclusively breast fed. Give ondansetron drops thrice daily for the next couple of days. If that does not help, get an ultrasound of the abdomen done to rule out pyloric stenosis.

Burping for around 15-20 mins is essential irrespective of whether you hear the burp. And hearing the burp does not mean that you would stop burping unless the stipulated time is up.

Regards
