Why Is Beta Blocker Discontnued When Suffering From Portal Hypertention?

Question: I was on Ziac (combo of Beta-Blocker and diuretic) for HBP. I recently had a hospital stay because of some blood problems possibly caused by liver disease. They diagonosed possibly portal hypertention, but took me off of the beta blocker, but kept me on a diuretic. Shouldn't I be continuing on the beta blocker? Since I have been off the beta blocker (about a month, now) my blood pressure is normal - take it daily, usually runs around 122/65 - 80.

To prevent bleeding secondary to esophageal varices,the most used drugs are beta blockers such as Propranolol or Nadolol. Probably your doctor thinks that is not necessary to take a beta blocker because you do not have esophageal varices, but because of the risk that exists,I think it is recommended to take a beta blocker.
