Why Is Duvadilan Prescribed During Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Tue, 21 Jul 2015
Question: My last mensuration cycle ended on 18 march, 2015. Then i conceived. On 15 XXXXXXX i sliped in my bathroom on tiles and my legs got slightly streched. Throughout the day i was fine. At night around 11:30 i got to see some blood spots. So next day in evening(as she visits the hospital from 5pm to 7pm) i visited my gynecologist and informed her the same. At that time she suggested me to take Duvadilan 10 mg(which i had taken earlier also as per her recommendation for 5 days)& 1 injection of duvadilan 1amp. And told us to get ultrasound and show her the reports next day. After that on same night around 3:30am i had a heavy flow of bleeding and severe pain( like labor pain) and had the miscarriage.
So i waNt to know, were her recommendations correct? And for what i was given duvadilan 10mg and inj.?

Brief Answer:
Yes, the recommendations were correct.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
As per your last menstrual period, you were around 12 - 13 weeks pregnant at the time of the incident on the bathroom.
It is possible that the miscarriage occurred due to the trauma of slipping in the bathroom.
However, there might be other reasons too.
The commonest reason is sometimes chromosomal abnormalities in the baby, due to which it gets expelled from the uterus.
Sometimes, inspite of all measures, the miscarriage will happen, it is called inevitable abortion.
AT times, it can be prevented by proper drugs and medications.
Duvadilan is a uterine relaxant, it relaxes the uterus.
So yes, it was the correct medication, as the doctor tried to prevent the process of miscarriage.
Apart from rest and such medication, nothing else can be done.
It was just unfortunate that this happened.
You can upload the ultrasound scan so that I can tell you what to do next.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Take care.

Now a day's after miscarriage i am bleeding very uncertainly. But there is no heavy flow so as to expel the remaining pieces.
Apart from procedure what can i do to expel them naturally?
And after this miscarriage is there any problem in having sex or in ovulation? If yes, till when i should not indulge in sexual activity?

Brief Answer:
Please upload ultrasound scan, avoid sex for 3 weeks

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
After a miscarriage, it is natural to have irregular bleeding, it might persist for upto 6 weeks.
Apart from procedure, tablets like misoprostol can be kept vaginally to help in expelling the products from the uterus.
As I said, i wish to have a look at the ultrasound scan, so that I can tell you what all can be tried apart from a D and C.
Would you please upload the scan report ?
After a miscarriage, or after a D and C, you should avoid intercourse for 3 - 4 weeks.
Ovulation might be quite unpredictable.
Also, avoid conception again for atleast 3 months.
You can use condoms / birth control pills .
Take regular folic acid supplements meanwhile.
Take care.

Brief Answer:
You can try medical management first.

Detailed Answer:
Generally the RPOC is measured on ultrasound scan.
If they measure more than 15 mm, D and C is done, else medical management is tried.
Right now, you can consult with your doctor regarding Misoprostol tablets.
200 mcg Misoprostol 2 tablets twice a day can be taken for 5 days, and then if that too fails in evacuating the RPOC, D and C can be done.
This is standard protocol, and I would ask you to consult with your treating doctor regarding it
It is an option to be tried before surgical procedure.
Take care.

Hello doctor,
Thank you for your opinion. It really made me relaxed and satisfied.
I have uploaded 3 new attachments carrying 2 ultrasounds and report for the same.
Kindly look into it and suggest if further any treatment is required.
Thankyou.

Brief Answer:
Uterus is normal, nothing to worry about.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
The latest scan shows that the uterine cavity is empty, and everything is normal.
That is very good news.
It means that no further medical / surgical steps need to be taken.
Did this happen naturally, or did you have any intervention ?
Now, just avoid conception for atleast 3 months.
Take iron and calcium and folic acid supplements regularly.
All the best
