Which One Of Bactrim And Cipro Is Good For Prostatitis?

default
Posted on Tue, 29 Apr 2014
Question: During the last 3 months, I have been on this site for abdominal pain, many good doctors have responded, but now I have been diagnosed with Prostetitis last week. I have been on Cipro, but seem to be getting stiffness, so they put me on Bactrim. Which one of these are better? But, the real question is how I got it and what if this is non bacterial? My urine was very clean.

Brief Answer: Prostatitis may be secondary to Enlarged Prostate. Detailed Answer: Hello Thanks for your query, based on the facts that you have posted it appears that you have Prostatitis and have been prescribed Bactrim . I shall be happy if you can post me few more details to help me in making comments on your problem. 1) Have you done Ultrasound scanning of abdomen ? 2) What is the size of prostate reported on ultrasound scanning? 3) Was the culture and sensitivity of urethral discharge done after prostatic massage ?and Bactrim was prescribed as per culture report.? Enlarged prostate is common at this age and in most of the cases is associated with chronic infection of the prostate. Please consult qualified Urologist for clinical and digital rectal examination and to get prostatic secretion for culture and sensitivity test. Prostatitis takes long time to get cured hence you will need to take appropriate antibiotic as per culture report for a long period of 4-6 weeks. Ciprofloxacin and Bactrim both are antimicrobial agents with different mode of action and are commonly prescribed in urinary diseases. However it is always advisable to take antibiotic as per culture report so as to get desired and quick results . Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions , I shall be happy to help you Thanks and Regards. Dr.Patil. .

Dr XXXXXXX I had a abdominal ultrasoud 4 months ago that was normal. A ct scan did show an enlarged prostate. My doctor said it comes with age. I did not have a prostatic massage. I had a clinical diagnoses with a rectal digital exam by two different doctors, my symptoms are discomfort after urination? I do not have pain during urination, and my stream is very good. I do urinate more frequent, once during early morning and again when I get up from bed. During the day, two or three more times than usual. I do drink more water now. Also my PSA 4 months ago was 2.2. I have been on meds for 4 days and symptoms are the same.

Brief Answer: Prostate Massage is to get Secretions for Culture Detailed Answer: Hello Thanks for feedback and follow up. In clinically diagnosed Prostatitis it is always helpful to get prostatic secretion from the prostate itself for culture so that it will establish pin point diagnosis of organisms causing the infection and appropriate antibiotics which is to be taken for long period. Please go ahead and get it done . Thanks and Regards. Dr.Patil.
