When Should Treatment For High BP Be Started?

default
Posted on Wed, 30 Apr 2014
Question: My son has "leaky kidneys". I assume he has nephrotic syndrome. His BP is 197/123, and he is only 34 years old. He also has high cholesterol. He has had scans and other tests but has not started any treatment yet (waiting for results). My question is how long can he go on with a BP that high without treatment?

Brief Answer: Blood pressure management is required immediately Detailed Answer: Dear Friend. Hi , I am Dr Anshul Varshney , I have read your query in detail , I understand your concern. I would advise you to take him to a good doctor and start his treatment immediately. With this blood pressure, he is in serious threat of brain haemorrhage. Treatment of Nephrotic syndrome / Chronic Kidney disease can be delayed till his results are out, but controlling his blood pressure should be the priority at this time as such high bp is going to injure his kidneys even more, and risk of sudden brain hemorrhage, myocardial infarction, hypertensive encephalopathy is always there. He should be given anti hypertensive drugs like Amlodipine, Frusemide, Clonidine, Prazosin which are used in patients with kidney problems. Once his reports are available, share with me, so that i can give you a conclusive diagnosis. And as far as your question is concerned, he can't live long with such a high blood pressure, i left untreated. This is my personal opinion based on details available here. If you still have any query you may please ask me. Stay Healthy. Dr Anshul Varshney , MD

My son lives in Australia so health care seems to be different over there. I cannot believe that he has not started medication or even been hospitalised yet. They have not even said if he can still go to work or not.

Brief Answer: Should get treatment. Detailed Answer: Dear Sir. The Blood pressure you have mentioned is a medical emergency. I suppose if your son has difficult in getting treatment there in Australia, I advice you to call him back to your native place where you can get his proper treatment. This is a matter of life and death. Shouldn't be taken lightly at all. If you have any further query please ask me. Else close the discussion and rate it. Stay Healthy.
