Question: I had BNP blood test done.. My number was 2834.. I was put on 40MG Lasix and potassium. Had an abnormal echocardiogram and am being sent to a cardiologist.. After several days on the Lasix I noticed no increased urine output, so they told me to double up on the Lasix for 3 days... There has still been no increase in urine output.. I slept 9 hours last night and still didn't have to go urgently when awakening.. (I always get up at least once normally, before this started).. I am having severe lower back pain that feels like it is going all the way through to my abdomen. I am starting to be concerned.. Thoughts? Thank you

I was having swelling in feet and legs and bloating and severe fatigue.. The BNP was done mostly as a screening, after I mentioned I have CHF in my family, I take 40 MG Prozac. 5Mg Ditropan, twice daily, 25 mg Atenolol.. Started 40mg Lasix once daily on 3-13-14.. Increased to 80mg from 3-20 to 3-22. Now back to 40mg. I don't have the echo, All they told me was a moderately enlarged left atrium and left valve hypertrophy(?). They did a urine culture 2x in the last month due to uti, no other tests.. Did blood tests.. CBC and such.. Said kidney function was normal.. Not sure how the blood test works for kidney function... Not feeling any better with Lasix.. No notable increase in urine output.. In fact, just to check, I waited until bedtime one day to take it, as I figured it would REALLY work if I was off my feet I slept 8 hours off and on and didn't urinate at all through the night.. The back pain is pretty bad, as I have a very high pain tolerance and it has nearly brought me to my knees a few times... I had several days of it.. It eased for a few days and came back with a vengeance on the 20th upon awakening.. It is very low near the hip on both sides of the spine.. hurts through to my abdomen.. If I press where it hurts I can feel it all the way through. If I sit in the right position it eases a lot.. also leaning forward seems to ease it some..

Brief Answer: suggest x ray Detailed Answer: Hi Sorry for the delayed response I am usually not late First, I can agree that the findings informed to you can be detected on an ecg and an x ray, if the person is well educated. But I would still recommend an Echo. As for Lasix, dont worry. It is known to cause increased urine. But cases where the urine did not increase are known. If your swelling has reduced, it is working. Besides, if you are taking Lasix in the morning, its effect would have worn out by night. And blood can show KFT- its in fact a blood test. Coming to the pain, I take it that the urine culture was normal both the times. I am also taking it you have no abdominal complaints like constipation or excessive diarrhoea. That indicates to me one main possibility- he nervous system. I would suggest an x ray of the LS spine, and MRI of the same region thereafter if required. There is a possibility that there has been development of spondylosis, or a similar condition. There is also a possibility that you are developing a condition frequent in post menopausal women- osteoporosis. If detected, a bone scan can be scheduled. Both these can be detected in the x ray, and confirmed by other tests. So I would suggest you move for a basic x ray first. Do you have any leg pain, tingling/numbness of the legs? Please do let me know the reports and further information, so I can help you further Dr Saumya Mittal
