Question: Hello,
I had protected sex with a commercial sex worker in Dubai almost 11 weeks back. Since then i had taken Elisa at 6 weeks which came non reactive then rapid spot test at 8 weeks which was non reactive again then at 10 weeks I took a DNA pcr HIV 1 which came not detected. After that I took a p24 antigen test at about 11 weeks along with EIA antibody test which showed negative for both. The method used for p24 was cmia method along with micropartical enzyme immno assay and electrochemiluminescence are these methods good ?? I took these test from SRL labs XXXXXXX Do i need to test again or am i fine to move on in life. I m really tensed please help me ?? I really don't know what is wrong with me ? Do I need to test again after 13 weeks ?? And are these test good enough to show me that I don't have hiv1 and HIV 2 ?? Pls help me and I have no kind of problems and I m not on any kind of medications . and pls suggest what other kind of test I should take so that I m relieved of this ?

Brief Answer:
HIV 1 ruled out Repeat test for HIV 2

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to HCM.
Thanks for posting your query.

You had protected sex. That itself assures you that you are very much unlikely to have HIV.
The negative HIV DNA PCR test done after 10 weeks ruled out HIV 1 infection (commonest HIV infection) beyond any doubt.
The negative Combo test (P24 antigen along with EIA antibody test for both HIV 1&2) done after 11 weeks almost ruled out the possibility of both HIV 1&2. HIV antibody formation might get delayed up to 12 weeks in some individuals. So it is better to repeat the rapid test once again by now, to get a fool-proof result. Even though HIV 2 is a very rare possibility and as you had protected exposure, it is almost sure that you are HIV free to the extent of 99.9%. But there is nothing wrong in getting another negative result with antibody based test and rule out
HIV 2 conclusively though it is rare and the possibility is negligible.

Hello ,
So the tests I have taken are good enough to show me that I am negative and can I continue having a sexual relation with my gf as since the 11 weeks I haven't had sex with her as I m really scared of infecting her. I smoke so I hope that does not delay the antibody formation ?? At about 12 weeks I'll take another anitbody test I wanted to know which generation test should i take 3rd generation Elisa or rapid test ?? And what are my chances of being HIV free if the test is non reactive from both HIV 1 and HIV 2 ??

Brief Answer:
All antibody based tests are equally good.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back.
Smoking has neither direct relation to the test result nor delay the antibody production. As you had already had tests up to 11th weeks, a simple rapid test or an ELISA test will be enough to confirm that you are totally HIV free as most of these test are having high specificity and sensitivity almost more than 98%. If you are able to 4th generation COMBO or DUO test after 12 weeks that also well and good and considered to be more superior.
After getting the negative HIV test at 12 weeks, you can resume you normal activities and sex contact.
No problem can afterwards.

According to you what are my chances of another negative ?? A combo test is a p24 antigen along with EIA ? Yeah I can get that test at 12 weeks. And do I have to test for any other STDs like I got tested hcv which was negative and hsbg which was again negative any other std I should test for ? After all this testing can I live a normal life without any tension ?? And can u tell me how much am I out of danger ?? Can u give me assurance that I will be fine after 12 weeks test pls !!!

Brief Answer:
You are free from HIV after 12 weeks test

Detailed Answer:
Hi Welcome back.
As you had protected sex and your tests were nonreactive for HIV at 11 weeks after the high risk activity you are free from HIV almost 99%.
When these tests becomes negative after 12 weeks, You are 100% free from HIV 1 and 2,. No more test is necessary afterwards.
Blood VDRL test for Syphilis can be done to rule out Syphilis. But as your had protected sex this is not necessary for you.
After a negative test at 12 weeks, you can lead a normal life without any fear of HIV.

And does the antibody teat done is for HIV 1 and HIV 2 ?

Hiii doctor
As u had adviced I took the HIV antibody test and a combo test on 83rd day after exposure. I have the following questions to ask
1- the antibody test method was cmia method is it a trusted method for antibody testing ? And is 83 days test conclusive or I should take another test next week for confirmation
2- if these test are conclusive am I out of danger completely like more than 100% ? Can I have sex with my girl friend without and doubt in my mind ? Can I lead a normal life without worrying about HIV ever again ? And also am I clear for both HIV 1 and HIV 2 ???
3- does vaccinations for TB , meningitis , and mumps have any effect on the blood test and lead to a false negative or can delay the antibody production??

Doctor pls advice as I m really scared and I am young I want to get ride of this and move on in life. Thank u in advance

Brief Answer:
HIV 1&2 free. CMIA test is conclusive.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back.
1. Almost all the HIV tests marketed are highly sensitive and specific up to 98% and above.
Especially CMIA is highly reliable almost 100%. You had the test around 12 weeks. It is very much conclusive.
2. You are HIV free (both HIV 1&2) to an extent of 100%. You can have sex with your girl friend without any fear. You can lead a normal life without worrying about HIV.
3. Vaccination for TB, Meningitis and Mumps have no effect on HIV test or antibody formation. Your test result is conclusive. Feel free and relax.
Have a nice time ahead.

Thank you doctor ,
Can you once again tell me I m absolutely fine so I can get some assurance from you. I m yet kind of worried about HIV . am I HIV 1 and HIV 2 free ?? And I had taken those vaccinations 2 days before the test so I hope it does not interfere with the antibodies. ?
Can I take one more test next week or its not necessary ??
I want to enjoy my life and I m still stuck up with this. Am I 100% HIV negative ???? From both HIV 1 and HIV 2 ??

Brief Answer:
You are free from HIV 1&2 beyond any doubt.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back

Now you are absolutely free from both HIV 1 and 2. There is no doubt about that. You need no more test for HIV. Your vaccination had no effect on the antibody formation and the outcome of the result. You can resume your routine and normal sexual activities as ever before. Just forget that incident once for all.
