What Symptoms To Look Out For After A Head Injury?

default
Posted on Mon, 4 Jul 2016
Question: Hello. Bumped top of my head (back left /side) yesterday agianst movable bus handle. Hard plastic. See attached pic. Still sore today. No other symptoms. At what point should i see doctor? Which symptoms? Abd how many days need to go by before i am in the clear regarding concussion or brain bleeding? I want to take an airplane flight within next week. Is that too risky after possible head injury, even without symptoms like nausea, dizziness, headache? Like i said, just soreness at the spot of contact. Is that normal for a minor bump? Please advise if i need medical attention or instead take wait and sse approach and for how long? And also, if can travel by plane a few days after bump.

Brief Answer:
Take pain killers if required, nothing serious

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Mild head injury may lead only to superficial soft tissue injury and no internal injuries in brain.
Is there any history of headache, vomiting, seizure, loss of consciousness, visual loss, hearing abnormalities, bleeding via ear or nose?
The pain will subside in a week.
You can travel by air route too.
Nothing serious.
Visit and consult a neurologist if any deterioration occurs.
Hope you found the answer helpful.

My only symptom so far is soreness/tenderness at spot where head hit handle on bus. Top of head towards back left. I didn't lose consciousness or have any of the symptoms you mention. But can these symptoms appear afterwards? How many days/weeks do I need to wait in order to be sure I don't have something more serious? I am worried that symptoms might appear after I start my travel. Are the odds in my favour if I get by the first 72 hours without those serious symptoms, with diminishing likelihood they will appear days later? Or is it unpredictable - can brain bleed take many days or even weeks to manifest?

The hit seems minor, it was a bump really, but I read on Web how even minor bumps can lead to brain injury...is that an overreaction? So basically, are you saying I don't need to see doctor unless I get those symptoms you mention?

Brief Answer:
You can get a consultation and CT head

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
If initial symptoms were not present and 2-3 days are asymptomatic, then such minor injury will not be a problem.
Mild risk of subdural hematoma remains which can occur days or weeks after the injury but presents with symptoms like headache, weakness, seizure, memory deficit.
If you are much concerned, you can visit a doctor and get CT head done.

I understand brain bleed can manifest days or weeks later, but is it fair to say that odds of serious head injury dininish after 2-3 days of no symptoms?

Brief Answer:
Nothing serious, be vigilant

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Late bleeding depends upon age and fragility of blood vessels and can appear after days or weeks too.
But for now, nothing seems to be serious.
Be watchful and calm.
Wishing for your good health and early recovery.
