What Is The Term Called For The Formation Of New Blood Circuit Around Blood Clot?

Question: Hi, have just been released from the hospital, acute pancreatitus, again. Two years ago I had a very serious bout with it and developed a portal vein thrombosis. I was under care for approx. 1- 1/2 year until the doctors decided that I could go to asperin therapy- "the clot is gone". This time, while I was being evaluated, I was told, and from the hesitancy in the telling, that that the clot was not gone-" but it was all good because our wonderful bodies adapt". My body has now produced a new vein structure over the clot. I was looking for the medical name that I was told, but cannot find it in my discharge documents. Is this a common thing-I feel blessed and a a little angry that I was not told this sooner (they had taken 4 additional CT scans, with contrast). Any advice in this area will be greatly appreciated. portal vein thrombus and pancreatitis

Detailed Answer:
Hi!

Welcome to health care magic!

I am Dr. Saddiq Ul Abidin. I have read your problem in detail and will try to help you in best way possible.

First of all, thanks for sharing the history in such trivial details. I must should admire they way it was put. I would try to be brief and simple in the discussion.

Please understand that in medicine most things doesn't go like simple mathematics. There are signs and symptoms, with some support of related labs and findings, and by that one thing should be kept in mind that majority are not 100 percent specific or sensitive, and there are certain limitations of machines.

Based on your improvement status, and labs at that time, it might have been quite possible to come with the conclusion that the thrombus is gone. It might have resolved and recurred again, or it might not have at all in the first place.

You were discharged on anticloting drugs and that was best they could do. If they had started you on even aggressive blood thinning medications, then this would have been added with some extra risks and side effects, which your physician might not have wanted you to have.

Having said that, let's come up with the explanation for which you have been told. It is not exactly like a miracle but, it is a normal response of body which in some cases is significant clinically to overcome disease symptoms, and the word for which you have been looking for, to explain this, is called anastomosis. It means formation of blood circuit around blocked site by other small vessels around the blockade. Same way as if main highway is blocked, traffic may ho on diversion paths to bypass the obstruction.

Hope this has answered your query, if you have any more questions, feel free to ask. kindly rate me generously before closing, and leave your feedback if possible.

Regards,
Dr. Saddiq Ul abidin.

Thank you! You are very helpful.

I have a GI doctor, and my GP doctor, and have been sent on occasion to the oncology center to see a specialist regarding the clot. Every time I am admitted to the hospital they ask who my cardiologist is.
Would it be wise to see specialist regarding my veins?

Brief Answer:
cardiologist role

Detailed Answer:
Hi! Thanks for your wonderful remarks. Actually if clot is big enough that it needs to be sented, if symptoms are increasing or there are absolutely not enough anastomosis around the blockage, a stent needs to placed to create a channel through the clot and for that you may need an interventional cardiologist. There doesn't seem to be any other reason for that purpose. Also if tendency to make clots is high you may need to keep in touch with cardiologist to avoid coronary artery disease.

I hope this has answered your query. Kindly don't forget to rate me generously and leave a feedback if possible. Regards.
