What Is The Eye Sight Requirement To Be Eligible For Civil Services?

default
Posted on Tue, 31 Dec 2013
Question: sir, I am opting for state Civil service and for state police service the eye sight requirement is attached with this query. My eye prescription for glasses has also attached with this. Please let me know whether I am eligible for this service or not ??? It has been given -The total amount of Myopia (including the cylinder) shall not exceed minus 4,00D. Total amount of Hypermetropia (including the cylinder) shall not exceed plus 4.00D. I am confused whether it is the addition of sperical and cyllindrical power or individual powers ??? Example- in my case power is SPH: -1.75 & CYL : -1.50 that means is the total power is considered to be -1.75-1.50= -3.25 ??? Am I approaching towards ineligibility ??? Because it may so happen that my total power may touch -4 (if now it is -3.25)??? Please clarify me sir. I am much worried. (before some 10 days I have again checked my eye and the doctor advised me to continue with the same glasses.)

Brief Answer: YOU ARE FIT AND ELIGIBLE. Detailed Answer: Hello, Welcome to Health care magic Iam Dr. DADAPEER K, an Ophthalmologist and I answer health problems related to eye. I reviewed your query and the reports which you have sent. Let me clarify your doubts first. The requirement regarding the total permissable refractive error says it should exceed 4 dioptres including cylindrical power. Your refractive error in both the eyes is -1.75 spherical and -1.5 cylindrical. Normally the eye power involves two axis and spherical power acts in both the axis and cylindrical power acts only in one axis. Hence your total power is -3.25 in one axis and -1.75 in another axis. Hence your total power is -3.25 and it comes within -4, the upper limit. And your second doubt, approaching ineligibiity? Since you are 33 years old, the increase in power is very unlikely as it would have stabled by now. Normally refractive power changes rapidly still 25 years and after this age it is very uncommon to find rapid increase in refractive error. This I think you would have noticed as your prescription is of 5th month and 10 days back also it is same. So I think no need to worry chances of yourself becoming ineligible because of eye problem are very minimal or there are no chances as of now. The remaining eligibility criteria like REQUIREMENT YOURS comments Distant vision better eye -6/6 or 6/9 better eye-6/6 FIT worse eye-6/12 or 6/9 worse eye-6/9 FIT NEAR VISION better eye- J1 both eyes J1 Fit Worse eye- J2 I guess other things like color vision, field of vision, binocular vision and fundus examination will be normal as you not mentioned them in your query. So overall you are fit and eligible for civil service examination. Hope the information is helpful to you WITH REGARDS

thank u sir. Sir will the spherical power be added with the cylindrical power to decide the eligibility or both will be kept separated ??? That means my glass is of -1.75 D spherical & -1.5 D Cylindrical or it will be considered as total -3.25 D ??? Another thing is that I was facing problem to see distant objects (such as letters on black board/ whiteboard in classroom and TV Pictures) since a long period of time (nearly about 15 years) but I was avoiding to check my eye with a doctor. (I admit that this was totally my fault). I got my eyes examined in the before 7 months and got this prescription and started wearing glasses. Recently I again checked my eyes for routine check up and the Doctor advised me to continue with the same glass. Before this I was advised to wear the glasses always but normally I was feeling more comfortable without glasses so I used to wear glasses only when it is required (like to see distant objects). I was feeling more comfortable to read the book without glasses but the to see distant objects I need glasses. I said this to the doctor she advised me not to wear glasses when I have to read books. Sir will it worsen my power if I don't wear glasses always but use it only to see distant objects ??? What should I do so that my power will remain constant and it will not worsen ??? Thanks in advance sir. thank u sir. Sir will the spherical power be added with the cylindrical power to decide the eligibility or both will be kept separated ??? I have been examined for color vision and it found to be ok. I have not been checked for any other defects like field of vision, binocular vision and fundus examination. What are the symptoms of these defects ??? Am I having any chance of having these defects because of hiding my eye sight problem for such a longer period ??? Thanks in advance sir.

Brief Answer: All the required parametres are fine. Detailed Answer: Hello Thank you for the followup query. The spherical power of the glass needs to be added to the cylindrical power to calculate the total power. Hence your total power is -3.25. As you have told for the last 15 years you had this problem of diminision of vision. Since you have not taken correction then probably it has slowly progressed over this period to the present refractive error. But once the growth of the eye ball stops which normally occurs by 21-22 years, further increase in the power do not occur. Since you are having myopia, which means near sightedness meaning good near vision you were comfortable for reading for near. But you need to wear the glass continuously all the time, this will prevent strain on the eye muscles and prevent progression. For the power to remain constant you need To wear the galsses regularly and continuously Healthy diet and nutrition rich in vitamin A like green leafy vegetables Healthy reading habits like reading in good illumination, watching TV from atleast 6 metres, avoiding reading from too near , avoiding long continuous hours of working with computer or laptop Field of vision is the field which you can see with both the eyes open. This can be checked by a test called as perimetry. However not required routinely. Usually this will be normal. Binocular vision is the ability to see or appreciate depth perception. Usually this will also be normal, hence no need to worry. Myopic fundus is seen in people with refractive power of more than -6, since your power is less, this problem will not be there. Hence you will not have any of these problems, no need to worry. Hope I have answered your questions. Thank you

thank U sir. Sir should i also wear glasses when reading books ??? (Although I feel more comfortable without glasses). Although I am feeling more comfortable without glasses to see the near objects should I still wear glasses ??? If I don't wear glasses always will my power likely to worsen ??? Please help me to be clear sir...

Brief Answer: It is better to wear glasses during reading. Detailed Answer: Hello, Thank you for the follow up query SINCE YOU ARE HAVING MYOPIA, SHORT SIGHTEDNESS IT IS NATURAL FOR YOU TO SEE NEAR THINGS CLEARLY EVEN WITHOUT GLASSES. But I will advice my patients to use the glass during reading also as this will prevent the strain on the eye muscles which may lead to worsening of the eye power especially in children. Since you are 33 years old and the chances for increase in the power are less or nil, though there is no need to wear the glasses regularly during reading, I advice you to use them as not using glasses may lead to strain on eye muscles and sometimes can cause headache and eye pain. Hope I have answered your query. Thank you
