Question: I am having loose motions since the last few days.. around 3 times each day. But historically evertime i have loose motions even 2 or 3 times, I feel very very weak.

I have Imodium capsules with me now. Wanted to check if I should take 1 or 2 capsules now to stop the loose motions. Should i take any anti biotics?

Brief Answer:
Imodium not recommended.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mr. XXXXXXX

Thank you for writing to us with your health query.

I would not advise Imodium to my patients with infective diarrhea as it can potentially worsen the infection.

That said, one capsule to reduce the amount of stool formation may be acceptable if the stools are completely watery and large in quantity.

Except Cholera, most watery diarrhea are generally caused by viral infection.

The most important aspect of treatment is fluid replacement in watery diarrhea so you should drink as much water as is required.

You can mix electral/ORS powder in the water so that enough electrolytes are replenished.

Continue ORS consumption as long as diarrhea persists, and if you have any pain in the abdomen and if the diarrhea does not stop within a day, consult your local doctor for examination and prescription of appropriate medicines.

A course of antibiotics may be necessary to prevent secondary infections if the diarrhea is viral.

Hope this answers your question.

Wishing you speedy recovery.

Regards.
