default
Posted on Thu, 5 Feb 2015
Question: I forgot to take one 200 mg of celebrex this morning. I also have 100 mg pills.
Shall I wait until tomorrow morning and take one 200 mg pill? Or should I take one 100 mg tonight and in the morning resume taking one 200 mg. It is now 6:30 pm.

Brief Answer:
Please take 100 mg now and then continue taking 200 mg from tomorrow

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in details.
Celebrex is celecoxib which is a pain reliever medication that belongs to a group of drugs called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

If you have missed a dose in the morning then you can still take your missed dose if it is within 12 hours. Since it is 6.30 pm right now and most likely less than 12 hours since you forgot to take the medication, it will be fine if you take a 100 mg pill since you have got that. You can take another 200 mg tomorrow in the morning.

In case it has been more than 12 hours since your missed dose then please take the next dose of 200 mg tomorrow morning. Please do not worry.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

So for future use, the key is 12 hours. Fewer than 12 hours, it is safe to take the 100 mg. More than 12 hours -- wait until next regular time.

I just happen to have a few 100 mg Celebrex pills. If I only have 200 mg, does the same 12 hour rule apply?

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

Celebrex is usually given at a dose of 100 mg twice a day or 200 mg once daily for osteoarthritis.

The half life of the medication is about 11 hours.

Keeping in mind the above two facts, it is best to have a single 100 mg Celebrex if the time since missed dose is about 12 hours in your case.

If the time since missed dose is fewer than 6 hours then you can still take the 200 mg dose.

In cases of more than 12 hours, practically it is best to have your regular dose the next time.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

As you may have guessed, Celebrex is a new medication for me. I was taking Daypro but after six months I began to have intestinal discomfort. I stopped taking it after 12 months because the doctor thought I had developed an ulcer.

Problem - The side effects of taking Celebrex are a concern. How does a patient find out the percent of persons who are taking Celebrex end up with bleeding stomach and strokes etc.? How does a patient determine their odds of having a problem?

I am trying to be a responsible and informed patient.

Hi XXXXXX,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

Your problem is understood and there are informative sources which might be able to help know the percent of persons having specific side effects. Once such website that combines reports of side effects from the FDA and voluntary information databases is www.ehealthme.com

Following is the information displayed on the website for your knowledge
(i) 72,880 people reported to have side effects when taking Celebrex. Among them, 5,274 people (7.24%) have Cerebrovascular Accident.
(ii) 72,892 people reported to have side effects when taking Celebrex. Among them, 133 people (0.18%) have Haemorrhagic Stroke.
(iii) 72,892 people reported to have side effects when taking Celebrex. Among them, 34 people (0.05%) have Embolic Stroke.
(iv) 72,892 people reported to have side effects when taking Celebrex. Among them, 1 people (0.00%) has Chronic Gastrointestinal Bleeding.

The facts might differ slightly with the actual figures, especially concerning gastrointestinal bleeding.

Any discomfort in stomach requires a screening endoscopy to be done should you be on oral pain relievers.
