Question: Doctor, it's about umbilical card infection of my 4 months old Boy baby. When he was 2 months, u.c was about to close but still some puz / wetness came out from it. Suddenly one day it opens and sides are bulged. We put drezz powder in it. Doctor asked to stop drezz and to note how frequently puzz comes. We stopped . Without filling the powder, The mouth is closed. While bathing, we are careful in preventing water to get inside, frequency of puzz oozing out also slows down. At present, he is four months old, 24 hours once puzz lightly comes and the mouth is sticky, that's all. we are directed to a surgian, he told intestine urinary tubes are exposed in pre delivery. Later it should go back. For him this doesn't happen. So we need to do surgery to check. He said without examining either scanning or nothing even without this history. Please guide us...

Brief Answer:
This patent urachus.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

During development of child, there is connection between urinary bladder and umbilicus. This gets obliterated before baby is born, rarely this communication may persist. This is called patent urachus. And it presents with recurrent discharging sinus at umbilicus.

Scanning is need to confirm. And dont worry it not a major operation, since doctor doesn't have to go deep down.

A small cut at umbilicus and doctor can tie up the urachus.

So see the doctor , get scanning done and after operation baby should be fine like all other babies.

Doctor told you without seeing this, because the presentation of discharging umbilicus sinus after birth is quite typical of this.So dont worry.Your doctor is right.

Hope this helps. Please ask if there are doubts.Regards.

Thanks doctor, now it comes to know that it may be um li al granuloma. We are advised to spread salt over it for 10 to 30 mnts twice a day. For the past one day no puzz comes. If its wet it is smelling. Otherwise it looks normal. So pls advise us.

Brief Answer:
That’s good news

Detailed Answer:
Apply salt as advised.

If scanning is not too costly for you, then get it done. This will doubly confirm the diagnosis.

If its granuloma no needs to worry, it will heal eventually.

Best wishes .Regards
