What Is The Cause And Treatment For Social Phobia?

default
Posted on Mon, 12 May 2014
Question: I just need some professional advice. I'm 25 years old and have been considered "shy" and "quiet" my whole life. I feel like it's more than that though. As far back as I can remember I've had an irrational fear of talking to people and tend to keep to myself. I just started a new job and was asked today why I was not verbally participating. It's not that I don't want to I just mentally can't do it. I'm tired of living this way and I want to do something about it I just don't know what to do.

Brief Answer: Personality issues Detailed Answer: Hello, Thanks for choosing health care magic for posting your GP query. I have gone through your question in detail and I can understand what you are going through. From what you have mentioned, it appears that either you have personality issues with avoidant personality traits or it could be social phobia. Both of them are very impairing conditions and need to be treated. The treatment can proceed in 2 ways. Either you can take medicines or you can proceed with the therapies. The medicines which can be effective are propranolol or clonazepam or paroxetine. They need to be taken for 4-5 months to be effective. The therapies which can be effective are REBT/CBT. This therapy is taken by either a psychologist or a psychiatrist in which the therapist identifies impaired cognitions (Thoughts) and try to correct them. They are 15-20 min weekly session and there should be around 8-10 sessions to help you with your illness. Hope I am able to answer your concerns. If you have any further query, I would be glad to help you. If not, you may close the discussion and if possible you may rate the answer for me, so that I get a good feedback. Brief Answer: Not the OTC medicines Detailed Answer: Hello These medicines are psychotropic medicines and not the over the counter medicines. To get these medicines issued , you need to have a prescription from a local psychiatrist of your own country. Do get a psychiatry consultation and discuss the issues that we have just discussed with your psychiatrist. Regards Dr. Srikanth Reddy MD
