Question: I suffer from high anxiety for a couple months, i have had change in my bowel movements sometimes diarreah and slight constipation sometimes loose stools or drier stools. I lost about ten pounds last month, sometimes i have an appetite and can eat decent and sometimes I dont when I start to think about all the illnesses i may have. I wanted to know if your mind can really affect your whole body, i have had blood tests done I am anemic and my doctor put me on iron pills, all other tests came back normal. I am going to see a therapist soon ,and all the doctors i have seen, seem to think that is the problem. I was just wanting another opinion. I havent felt like myself for a while and I cant stand it anymore. I cant seem to let myself accept im ok when my doctor tells me i am. Please help. Brief Answer:
You may have psychosomatic disorder

Detailed Answer:
HI
Thanks for using healthcare magic. I, Dr Abhishek Kapoor, would help you in this query.

I think, you may have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The kind of symptoms you have, are more towards IBS and it could be increased by stress or underline psychological disorder. In that case, diagnosis in your case, could be psychosomatic disorder. That means, psychological disorder is aggravating physical disorder. In your case, you can either try some antidepressant like tricyclic antidepressant or relaxation exercise after psychiatrist consultation. That would help you to control symptoms.

If you need further help, you can ask.

Thank you Dr. XXXXXXX
I do have a few more questions, my mother had ovarian cancer, at 62 years of age. I was so terrified i was having symptoms like her that when i went into emergency, i begged for an ultra sound. all the doctors who looked at it including my gynecologist later on said they were fine. My gynecologist found out through my blood work that I was suffering from anemia due to heavy periods. I had a biopsy done on my uterus and it came out clean as so did my pap smear and pelvic exam. She put me on Merina to stop my periods. Since ive had it in for a short time (literally a week) I cant stand it knowing I have an foreign object inside me. The thought of not being able to have my period bothers me for some reason. Ever since last month i have been soo nervous and cant eat right, still feeling that even though they say i am ok i am not. I am so petrified, i cant sleep well, ive lost my appetite (sometimes i can eat but small amount, but mostly i cant eat how i used to) I almost feel like i dont want to put anything in my mouth. I dont enjoy the things I used to. I just keep thinking that Im not ok. It is really ruing me. My doctor and her nurses have had to calm me down numerous times cause i keep brining up the subject if i am ok. Should I just accept what they say? How can I get my mind back to a normal state. I am going to a therapist for the first time on Friday. I think im giving myself symptoms cause i cant stop thinking about it. I have had alot of stress in my life lately. Please help.

Brief Answer:
You are seriously in stress

Detailed Answer:
Hi

The way you have explained you symptoms, i thing is sure, you are in stress and due to stress, your gastric upset is increasing. In stress, acidity increases and it leads to more symptoms. In that case, you need therapist's help. That would help to control the symptoms. You should take antidepressant with relaxation exercise. That would definitely help in your case.

If you have more query, you can ask.

Brief Answer:
Stay calm

Detailed Answer:
HI

First you should get yourself properly investigated to rule out any physical disorder, but remember, you should try to control mental balance too. That would help to control effect of stress on physical disorder. If you stay in this stress, that ,you may have any disorder, then chances of complete recovery would decrease. Remember, our life is run by our thoughts. Keep your thoughts positive, that would help to get positive result from body.
