Question: GASTROENETOLOGY:
Doctor, My mother-in-law is 89 years old. She had stent in the heart 15 years back. Undergone chemotheraphy for cancer of the veginal wall. She has congestive heat failure of class 3 since 4 years. Since 3 years , on some days she will have loose motions and sometimes constipation. If she didnt have motion for 3 or 4 days , she will take Duphalac and gets it,even though she doesnt take any food which causes motions like leafy vegetables and like. sometimes she cannot control it and gets it even before going to the bath room . Her digestion is weak.what is the probable reason for this unanticipated motions quite often in the past 3 years. Will there be any intestinal infection or any other much more serious nature. I feel at this age, she should not be exposed to undergo a series of tests. whats your opinion? If you have any question to be answered, please advise.

Brief Answer:
fecal incontinence

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

At the age of 89, it is a common finding to have fecal incontinence. This is what your mother-in-law is experiencing.

It is not because of intestinal infection or other serious causes. It is just because of loss of the tone of the anal muscles. This is expected at her age.

Hence, you need not do anything about it now, at this age. You can use disposable adult napkins for the same. Your mother in law can wear it at bedtime.

Otherwise, nothing to be worried about.
