Question: What can an internal meds doctor do if a person has severe edema where water blisters form on the skin?

Hello and thank you for your question.
The first thing an internist would do would be to determine the cause of this edema. Edema most often comes from heart, kidney or liver disease and the doctor would need to do test to figure out the cause.
They would then determine the best way to treat the underlying disease.
Next the doctor could prescribe diuretics to get some of the fluid out of the body. Blood test would need to be followed to make sure that electrolytes and kidney function remain stable while you are on the diuretics.
