Brief Answer:
narrowing of the spaces in the spine

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Stenosis refers to narrowing of a space and spinal stenosis refers to narrowing of a space in the spine or back.
The back/spine is made up of the bones/vertebra , the discs in between the vertebra and the nerves essentially.

Narrowing of the space between the bones/vertebra can , in some persons, put pressure on the nerves in the area can cause nerve related pain.

Sciatica is used to describe pain that is due to issues with a nerve called the sciatic nerve. This nerve starts out in the back.

If there is pressure on this nerve in the back due to narrowing of the spine/bones (spinal stenosis), then this can cause sciatica.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
