Brief Answer:
Atrophy is loss of structure & function of tissue.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query on HealthcareMagic.

Atrophy is loss of structure and function of particular body tissue.
Atrophy of pancreas means that the pancreatic tissue has wasted and its function is also compromised.
The function of pancreas is secretion of digestive enzymes and certain hormones.
Atrophy of pancreas can lead to decreased function of the organ.
In order to assess the functional capacity of the pancreas you need to get some tests done.
These tests are serum lipase and serum amylase.
If lipase and amylase are within normal range, then functional capacity of pancreas is within normal limit.
However, if the levels are low, then you need to consult your gastroenterologist for further management.
Atrophy can result from chronic inflammation of the pancreas.
Repeated attacks of acute pancreatitis can lead to chronic pancreatitis and thus fibrosis.
Partial atrophy may not affect the pancreatic function much, however, if the atrophy is complete then chances of complications are more.
Besides lipase and amylase levels, get blood glucose levels also since glucose metabolism is also controlled by pancreatic hormones.

In any case, consultation with a gastroenterologist will be helpful.

If you have more queries, I will be glad to answer.
