What Is A White Patch At The Back Of The Mouth Along With Some Soreness?

default
Posted on Tue, 29 Sep 2020
Question: Hi, My daughter just discovered a bright white patch in the back of her mouth that is about 1CM in diameter. She says that she's felt some soreness on that same side that may go up towards her ear on that same side. She also says that maybe the tissue around it split and exposed the white patch. She says that she has a weird taste in her mouth as well. She also mentioned "yellow veins" in it.

Brief Answer:
Possibly Infectious in origin

Detailed Answer:
Hello Ma'am,

I can certainly understand your concern for your daughter.

I have worked through your attached query in detail.

As per your description, the possibility of oral mucosal inflammation is very high. The patch could either be infectious in origin or a leukoplakia. Image guidance would be more helpful.

Nothing to worry much. I generally prescribe a short course of oral antibiotics like Co-Amoxyclav i.e. Augmentin (625mg) twice daily for 5 days and mouthwash like Chlorhexidine thrice daily for 1 week to my patients with such symptoms.

Please check with your physician if he shares my view and if can prescribe these medications to your daughter.

Avoid spicy/sour foods until the lesion heals.
