Brief Answer:
Yes, You can take it

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for your query. Welcome to HCM.

Xanax is a brand name of benzodiazepine alprazolam, which is commonly prescribed for decreasing anxiety. It has short half life, so it needs to be taken repeatedly and that is why it is habit forming. When you will take it on a regular basis for long duration, you will become addict to it and then it is very difficult to withdraw the drug. Tapering the drug will result in withdrawal symptoms.

I usually prescribe klonopin 0.25 mg twice a day for decreasing anxiety in clients of your age. Though it is also benzodiazepine, it has longer half life and does not require repeated dosing. It is less habit forming.

Taking a benzodiazepine for anxiety should be short term only, it should not be continued for more than 4 weeks. If your symptoms are pure of anxiety disorders then you have to go for antidepressant drugs which will remove anxiety from the grass root level [at neurochemical level in your brain], taking benzos for anxiety wont help you in long run. You will develop tolerance and want higher dosage for the same effects.

I here suggest you to discuss about these issues with your doctor. Whether you have been given for short duration? what is in your doctor's mind? If it is to be continued for long duration it should be given with antidepressant drug.

Finally the main question of yours. If the anxiety is not getting controlled with 0.5 mg dose then you can take 0.5 mg twice a day but discuss this with your doctor also. There are risk of dizziness, drowsiness and fall with higher dose.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have further question then feel free to ask.

Brief Answer:
Anxiolytics reduce it to some extent only

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for writing again.

Hearing loss at your age, particularly if it is sensorineuronal hearing loss, is often associated with tinitus. There is no absolute treatment.

If the hearing loss can be counter by hearing aid then tinitus may go away but for this you have to go for ENT consultation.

Apart from that vitamin supplement particularly vit. B12 1500 mcg in a day will help.

If you have develop anxiety and panic attacks due to tinitus then anxiolytics and anti depressant like lexapro, zoloft, prozac, paxil, cymbalta can help. Do not take xanax much. Ask your doctor to replace ot with klonopin.

Anxiolytics like xanax may reduce the tinitus but complete cure or significant reduction wont be there with it. If it is sensorineuronal hearing loss that can not be corrected by hearing aid then tinitus will be there for life long. You have to accept it and live with it.

There are non pharmacological methods for reducing the severity and perception of tinitus. You can search and learn those methods from internet.

Regular check up for your health particularly of sugar, thyroid hormones, BP, electrolytes should be done.

Discuss all these with your doctor.

Have you heard of Tinnitus Retraining Therapy or CBT for tinnitus? How effective is B12 1500 mcg. What does MCG mean. Have you heard of habituation ? Is there any help out there for people with tinnitus? My audiologist spoke about a crossover hearing aid. Can u tell me about that?

Brief Answer:
Yeah, TRT will be helpful to you

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for writing again.

Tinnitus retraining therapy is used for chronic subjective tinnitus and you are the Ideal candidate. It contains two components:
1. Habituation to emotional response to tinnitus
2. Habituation to perception of tinnitus

You can go for it. It will be beneficial to you.

MCG means micrograms. Vit B12 is not directly involved in the pathology of tinnitus but I have seen in my clinical practice that it reduces the severity of tinnitus to some extent and gives some relief to the patients.

There are tinnitus association in every developed countries. You can search online depending upon your country. There is ATA [American], BTA [British] and so on. They have volunteers and they are providing support contact details from which you can contact them and ask for help.

Sorry, I have not come across crossover hearing aid. I have searched through internet also but it is CROS hearing aid which is used for unilateral hearing loss but not for bilateral. Ask your audiologist for detailed information.

Hope I have answered your query. If you do not have further query then close the discussion and rate the answer.

Wish you good health.

I have one sided hearing loss. Yes the name of hearing aid is called Cros. Have you heard of Cochlear implants. Who is a candidate? What are the risks?

Answered by Dr. Ravi Soni (13 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Yeah, Cochlear implants are used

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for writing again.

While hearing aids can be helpful for most people with hearing loss, there are some for whom hearing aids either do not help or help insufficiently. In such cases, cochlear implants can be helpful and are being used by more people with severe and profound hearing loss who no longer benefit from hearing aids.

Cochlear implants works well but can not replace normal hearing. It is not indicated in people with mild to moderate hearing loss and in those who can hear well with hearing aids.

Best adult candidates are:
1. Have severe to profound hearing loss in both ears
2. Have had limited benefit from hearing aids
3. Have no other medical problems that would make the surgery risky
4. Have a strong desire to be part of the hearing world and communicate through listening, speaking, and speech reading
5. Have lost their hearing after speech and language development

There is a process of rehabilitation and training in adapting to the sounds of cochlear implant post surgery which requires high motivation. After surgery there is a procedure called 'MAPPING' for adjusting the function of cochlear implant as per your sound perception.

There are no risks of cochlear implant per se but the risks with anesthesia and surgical procedure are there. If you are planned for cochlear implant then you will be given all details for it before doing surgery.

Your audiologist must be knowing for this but if he has asked for CROS hearing aid then you should first go for that one.

Hope I have answered your query. If you do not have further query then close the discussion and rate the answer.

Wish you good health.
