What Does This Urinalysis Report Indicate?

Question: my mom just got a urine test done. report shows presence of bacteria and blood in urine. wbc count 60-80 hpf and rbc count 100-150 hpf. what could the possible reason be ? she passed some blood while urinating hence we got the test done.

Thanks for your query,based on the facts that you have posted it appears that your mother has hematuria and her routine urine test revealed presence of plenty of RBC and Pus cells suggestive of active UTI .

I shall be happy if you can post me few more details to help me in making comments on your problem.
1) What is the age of your mother?
2) Is she in menopausal age group?
3)Does she have urinary complains like burning urination ,urgency,frequency etc?
4) Does she have pain in abdomen?

Hematuria at this age could be due to one of the following common reasons.
1) UTI secondary to post menopausal urethral stenosis.
2) Mass lesion in urinary system
3) Stones either in kidney or ureter.( Rare at this age)

Please consult qualified Urologist for clinical examination and get following basic tests done under his guidance to confirm the diagnosis.
1) Urine culture to find out the organisms causing this infection and antibiotics to which they are sensitive to.
2) Ultrasound scanning of abdomen
3) Intravenous Pyelography or C T Scan of the urinary system
4) Endoscopic examination of Bladder (Cystoscopy),

In the mean while assuming her symptoms to be due to infection(UTI)you can start broad spectrum antibiotics like Cefexine along with urinary antiseptic like Nitrofurantoin twice daily and urine alkaliser thrice daily.Later on switch on to appropriate antibiotics as per culture report.

Further treatment will depend upon the results of these tests and final diagnosis.

Thanks for your reply doc. To answer your questions

1. age 63
2. Not sure if she is in the menopausal age group, but my guess is she is in the "post menopause age group"
3. She had a frequent urination urge day before yesterday which is when she passed blood in her urine. That was the only incident which prompted us to get urine test done and consult our family doctor. Family Doctor suggested urine alkaliser sachets twice a day, norflox 400 mg and tab xifi 200 mg (both twice a day).

She hasnt had a recurrence of the episode thereafter and urine has been clear with no blood
4. She did not have pain in abdomen

Thanks for feed back.
Since this is first incidence presence of RBC and Pus cells strongly suggests UTI.

Get her Urine culture done to find out the organisms causing this infection and antibiotics to which they are sensitive to.
This will help to take appropriate antibiotics to combat infection.

If she gets repeated episodes of UTI you may need to consult qualified Urologist to evaluate on the guide lines I have suggested in my reply earlier.

Ensure she drinks more water to keep her urine dilute.
